Last fall we put a new roof on our house. Our plan was to finish the garage this summer but June, July, August and then September snuck by without it getting done. We’ve started having frosty mornings so it was really time to get our roof done or wait until another summer.
This Saturday we got to work. Ruben came by to help us take off our old roof and in a matter of hours went went from rotten old shingles to bare roof.
After tidying up all the shingles we started laying the new roof. It certainly wasn’t as warm as last fall but that made roofing a little more pleasant. We got one whole side done and half of another side before we called it quits for the day.
When we woke up Sunday morning we both really, really wished we’d finished it the day before. I felt like I’d run a marathon – so achy I could barely hobble down the hallway. We went to our morning swim but came home just as stiff and sore as before. Still, the roofing had to go on.
Lucky for us Mike, Mic and Emerson showed up to help us finish it. Mike helped Jon on the roof while I puttered in the garden and cleaned up. It took us a couple more hours but by the time they left we only had the ridge cap left to finish.
It felt pretty good to be done. Once we got the ridge capping done we had just enough energy left to tidy up and grab a few groceries before crashing on the couch for the rest of the evening. I’m sure I’ll be sore tomorrow but it is worth it to have that off the to do list!
