I’m still north of Fort McMurray and still working. The work I’m doing is definitely the messiest site I’ve ever done – thick tar like bitumen now covers everything I’ve brought into the field. My coveralls, hard hat and boots are a sticky black mess. I’ve gone through close to 50 pairs of disposable gloves, four pairs of work gloves and over 24 canisters of brake cleaner fluid (degreaser) in the past three days. Everything I touch is sticky, and walking is difficult. I dread having to use our equipment, because at some point in the near future I’m going to have to clean all the mess off it. I can’t wait to be home and rid myself of sticky clothes and the smell of orange solvent.
